Welcome

Many of us in the Metro Washington, DC area have been amazed by this year’s record-breaking snowfalls. Just when one storm has turned to dirty slush, a new one arrives with a fresh blanket of glistening snow. Though we may grow tired of it all, I wonder if a similar winter centuries ago helped inspire a prayerful song: “Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow…create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit in me!” (Psalm 51)

Welcome to Emmanuel’s website. As you explore these pages, I invite you to consider how you are covered with the love, forgiveness, and acceptance of God–more abundantly than with all the snows ever experienced. On Ash Wednesday, February 17, we begin the season of Lent– a time for worship and prayer, reflection and renewal. We contemplate the teachings of Jesus and his willingness to take up a cross for us; and we consider again what it means to follow him…to “lose ourselves” and make those sacrifices that bring life to others!

Perhaps you are at a moment when you’d like to have a “do over!” Perhaps you’re looking for greater meaning and purpose for the life you’ve been given! Perhaps you’re simply looking for a church community where you can celebrate God’s goodness and grow in your faith. Jesus offers new beginnings, new hope, and new life. As the writer of Psalm 51 goes on to say: “O Lord, open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise…a broken and contrite heart you will not despise!”

We at Emmanuel invite you to join us on the Lenten journey. Please see the “Announcement” section for info about our Sunday and Wednesday worship services, weekly soup suppers, small group studies, and service opportunities. Join us…and allow us to become friends. As the snows give way to springtime, let us together prepare for the gladness of Easter and promise of all things made new!
